Artificial Intelligence in Context: Applications, Ethics and Governance

Artificial Intelligence in Context: Applications, Ethics, and Governance offers a multidisciplinary examination of contemporary AI by situating technical innovation within its social, ethical, and political environments. Bringing together contributions from computer science, medicine, engineering, architecture, energy studies, and the humanities, the volume moves beyond abstract discussions to explore how AI systems operate in real-world settings. The first part presents cutting-edge applications of AI across domains-from medical imaging and pathology to autonomous systems, urban safety, architecture, and sustainable energy-demonstrating the practical capacities and limitations of current technologies. The second part shifts focus to critical perspectives, addressing freedom, fairness, governance, public administration, and emerging debates on machine cognition and qualia. By integrating technical rigor with normative reflection, this book provides researchers, practitioners, and policymakers with a contextualized understanding of AI as both a technological and socie- tal force.
