Glasses

Glasses tells the story of Flora Saunt, a young woman whose beauty has always seemed like a promise of an easy future. Surrounded by admiration, she believes that charm alone will carry her through life. Yet behind her radiant presence lies a truth she refuses to admit: her eyesight is failing, and with it the certainty that beauty can protect her. Through the gaze of an observer who both adores and fears for her, Henry James reveals how much of a person’s life can be shaped by what others see. As Flora struggles to preserve the image she has built, the novel becomes a quiet meditation on pride, love and the courage required to face oneself without disguise. Glasses invites us to look beyond appearances and to ask what remains when the mirror begins to blur.
